Boston's Leader Michelle Wu Counters President Trump's Warning to Move FIFA World Cup Matches from Boston

The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, implied that the municipality was prepared for a dispute with President Donald Trump regarding his assertion that he could instruct FIFA to relocate World Cup games from the stadium in Foxborough, situated 22 miles southwest of Boston.

Wu spoke on a local podcast recently to address comments from the Trump administration, which had described her as "far-left." President Trump had warned that he would call FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "improve its situation."

A great deal of it is locked down by contract so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can change it.

She continued, "We're in a world where for drama, for control, to test limits ... ongoing threats ... are directed at people and cities who refuse to back down and comply or follow along to a hateful agenda."

Mayor Wu further stated, "We are going to continue being who we are, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging what Boston stands for." She concluded by emphasizing her commitment for the Boston, declaring, "Fully committed for our city."

Trump's Statements and FIFA Role

Earlier this week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen alongside Trump at the Gaza summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also been to the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and Club World Cup trophies to Trump as gifts.

Earlier, President Trump was questioned on recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police car being burned. He replied, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the president of FIFA, who's great."

Trump continued, "I'd tell him: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it very easily." The president also specifically targeted Wu, saying, "Their mayor is ineffective ... she's far-left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"

Past Threats and Upcoming Tournament Information

Trump has made previous comments that he would have the similar discussion with the FIFA president about moving games from Seattle and San Francisco, which are part of the 16 locations across the continent.

The US is co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be played from June 11 to July 19 in the coming year.
